As I've already told you, we're doing pictorial tributes in our Flickr group this week. At first I struggled with ideas but once the first idea came, other ideas followed quickly. Nonetheless, I was somewhat stymied trying to find a way to pay tribute to my 82-year old mother with a photograph. Our moms teach us all kinds of things but most of them are quite difficult to portray in pictures: love, caring, honesty, sharing, trustworthiness, etc., etc. Then I thought of one so obvious, I couldn't believe I didn't think of it sooner.
My mother loves to read. I can never remember a time when my mother has not had a book at hand. Some of my earliest memories involve my mother, sitting on the sofa with her feet curled under her, reading. Even as the TV and the kids played on around her, my mother was adept at tuning it all out, so engrossed was she in her books.
Happily, my mother passed along that love of reading to my sister and me. My sister is a voracious reader, and so am I. Nor has this wonderful habit stopped with my generation. With a bit of luck I've been able to pass along a love of reading to my daughter, Krista, as well. I have no doubt that Campbell will become an avid reader, too. She already loves hearing stories as well as telling stories and is chomping at the bit to learn to read by herself.
To wrap up this post, I'll tell you that part of this reading addiction involves murder mysteries. That is probably my mother's favorite genre and although my sister, daughter and I have broader tastes, we've all picked up the mystery bug. The books you see pictured above are from a series that my sister suggested to me just weeks ago so I've happily embarked on a trip through Venice via the series of Commissario Brunetti tales. Thanks, Evie!
Thanks, Mom.
