For the past week or so Campbell has consistently gotten up in the middle of the night and come into our room wanting to sleep with us. I've talked to friends who say their toddlers went through similar spells around the same age and out grew it. She has had similar nocturnal disruption spells and has out grown those - the only difference is this time she can get out of bed by herself where as before we were awakened by crying. So, since sleep is very important to me and I don't do well when I'm short on it (just ask Adam I get pretty cranky) I usually just scoop her up and let her finish out the night with us. I know some people may just faint at the idea but I really figure there are far worse things in life than a 2 year old who occasionally sleeps part of the night with her parents. Plus, I recognized my inability/unwillingness to go through sleepless nights when she was a baby (one of many reasons she will be an only child) and because I can sleep just fine with her in the bed.
Adam is less open to the idea of her sleeping with us namely because she crowds the dog (I'll leave that one for another post). So, last night we decided to try the ignore her tactic and see if she'd put herself back to bed so that I didn't have to leave the warm comfort of my bed to put her back in bed. Well, her nocturnal wandering started much earlier last night. Adam and I were sitting on the couch playing Ticket to Ride with a couple friends online when she came padding out of her bedroom and stopped in the middle of the dining room DollyCocoViolet in hand at about quarter to 10. I just looked at her and told her she needed to go back to bed and then went back to my game. She proceeded to stand there for the next 10 minutes not saying a word just sighing loudly every minute or so. Then she progressed to laying down in the dining room floor - still sighing.
We finished our game and started to get ready for bed - still ignoring the pajama-clad clump in our floor. I walked past her to get the sheets out of the dryer - each pass soliciting an especially loud and pathetic sigh which left me giggling into my pile of sheets. As I'm making the bed I hear a shuffling noise. I turn around and through the doorway comes Dolly scooting along the floor, then Coco and then Campbell doing a soldier crawl along the floor as if to sneak in unnoticed. At this point I completely busted into laughter and fled the room trying to continue the ignoring charade by dissolving into hysterics in the bathroom. My attempt at subtlety was apparently no better than Campbell's as I soon heard her asking Adam "What's Mommy doing?"
So much for ignoring her. We should have known better. If there is one thing to be said about my little girl - she is not someone to be ignored!

She blew her cover, didn't she!

That's hilarious. I was never able to keep a straight face with my boys either.
